Lockheed Martin Canada
“We don’t know what’s going to change the world next,” says Lockheed Martin Canada Chief Executive, Charles Bouchard, “but Lockheed Martin and its partners are probably already working on it.”
From naval innovation to renewable energy and autonomous systems to cyber security, Lockheed Martin Canada is building upon its 78-year tradition as Canada’s trusted defence partner with an eye to the future.
“Our guiding vision is to strengthen the Canadian economy and deliver reliable and affordable, state-of-the-art technologies that are tailor-made for Canada’s unique needs,” says Bouchard. “From the bottom of the ocean to beyond the stratosphere, we’re engineering a better tomorrow.”
Headquartered in the nation’s capital, Lockheed Martin Canada includes 950 highly skilled employees living and working in Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, Calgary, Victoria and within customer locations across the country. Across all programs, it manages more than 1,400 contracts with companies of all sizes located within nine provinces.
Lockheed Martin Canada has earned a global reputation as an innovative naval integrator and developer of its world-class combat management system, CMS 330. In November 2016, they celebrated the successful on time and under budget completion of the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax class Modernization project. Described as “the brain of the ship,” CMS 330 integrates signals from radar, missile systems and other sensors, displaying this information on a series of screens and consoles. With its roots stretching back over 25 years to the original build of the Halifax class, this Canadian-developed, Canadian-proven technology has also been repurposed for Canada’s new fleet of Arctic Offshore Ships (AOPS) and has gained international attention by becoming a core solution for the modernization of the Royal New Zealand Navy’s ANZAC class frigates.
Since it first entered service in 1960, Lockheed Martin’s C-130 Hercules tactical transport aircraft has become a symbol of Canada’s global efforts. The torch has been passed to the newest “J” model with Royal Canadian Air Force’s fleet. In July 2016, Lockheed Martin Canada was awarded a five-year renewal contract to provide in-service support for the Hercules fleet and has invested in innovative logistical support technologies such as IMP Aerospace’s Interactive Electronic Technical Manual. According to Bouchard, “we take great pride in witnessing the workhorse of the Royal Canadian Air Force operating in missions around the world – whether it is supporting humanitarian aid operations conducted by the Disaster Assistance Response Team or transporting troops and equipment to Canada’s far north.”
Through Sikorsky, the latest addition to the corporation’s family, Lockheed Martin Canada supports the delivery and sustainment of Canada’s new CH-148 Cyclone. From detecting submarines to search and rescue missions, this state-of-the-art helicopter will meet the Canadian Armed Forces’ operational demands well into the 21st century.
Meanwhile, more than 110 Canadian companies have contributed to the development and production of the F-35, the world’s most advanced, combat-ready fighter jet, with Canadian industry being awarded over one billion dollars to date.
In April 2017, the company was once again named a top employer in the National Capital Region, a recognition it has consistently received since 2002. In addition to competitive salaries and benefits, it was recognized for its forward-thinking policies that allow its employees to balance the demands of the workplace with home.
Looking forward into the future, Lockheed Martin Canada is eager to compete for roles in the replacement of the Canadian Surface Combatant, the replacement of Canada’s fighter aircraft aircrew training, as well as clean-tech energy solutions.
Supporting Community and Innovation
Lockheed Martin Canada’s impact has been felt beyond the company through its many community partnerships. Last year, it increased its support of New Brunswick’s Joint Economic Development Initiative, which helps train Indigenous business leaders, and delivered an S-76A helicopter maintenance trainer to the Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies. It also proudly supports STEM education through its philanthropic contributions to ACTUA and Cubes in Space. They support many military and veteran related causes including Canada Company’s Military Employment Transition (MET) network, the annual Army Run, the National Capital Open – Support our Troops in support of causes related to veterans homelessness and the 2017 INVICTUS Games.
Its support of innovation often filtered to Small and Medium Enterprises including two of Canada’s leading quantum computing companies – Halifax’s QRA and Vancouver’s D-Wave. At the university level, one of Lockheed Martin Canada’s proudest partnerships is its $1.1 million investment in the University of Waterloo’s Pression – a spinoff company whose founder, Dr. Chekema Prince, recently won the Ontario Centres of Excellence’s Martin Walmsley Award for Entrepreneurship.
