Lieutenant-General Wayne D. Eyre of the Canadian Armed Forces is the appointed Deputy Commander Designate of United Nations Command (UNC) Korea, the first non-US General Officer to hold the post in its 68-year existence. The appointment of Lieutenant-General Eyre demonstrates Canadian leadership and underlines Canada’s enhanced role in recent years in support of stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) is only as good as the troops and support it gets from contributing countries. Given the recent concern over Canada’s upcoming contribution to the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one might easily assume that up until now few Canadians had ever set foot in Mali. However, this is far from the case.

A multiphase contract to protect an international Naval port has been awarded to Rheinmetall. It includes the installation of state-of-the-art sensor and advanced command and control technology and software to protect equipment from unauthorized access, damage and sabotage. Work will begin in 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2021.

For the fifth consecutive year MBDA recorded a high in orders, worth €4.2 billion, in 2017 while revenue amounted to €3.1 billion. By 31 December the company’s order book reached a record peak of €16.8 billion, giving the group prospects for sustained growth over the next five years.

The United Kingdom has awarded MBDA a £400 million contract for the capability sustainment programme (CSP) of the advanced Brimstone air-to-surface missile, to extend its service life beyond 2030.

HMCS Chicoutimi has returned to CFB Esquimalt, B.C. after a 197-day deployment in the Asia-Pacific region, marking a historic milestone for the Royal Canadian Navy submarine fleet after a nearly 50-year absence from the region.

Defence Minister Harjit S. Sajjan recently returned from Iraq and Kuwait where he met with key officials, allies and Canadian military personnel to get an update on progress in the region. As the situation in Iraq continues to progress Canada is assessing how its military engagement in the region must also evolve to meet the changing needs.

Brazilian President Michel Temer was present for the transfer of the Riachuelo diesel-Electric attack submarine to its assembly hall in Itaguai, Brazil. French shipbuilder Naval Group completed the transfer of technology for the ProSub programme, which provides the country with state-of-the-art equipment made in Brazil, and provide ongoing support as needed.

For its pending FFG(X) acquisition of 20 frigates, the U.S. Government has awarded a contract to the United States shipyard General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, supported by the Spanish ship designer and shipyard Navantia, for a conceptual design.
