Fire onboard HMCS Fredericton at sea
NATO Maritime Command has announced that on the early morning of 18 November 2021 while at sea off the coast of Norway, a fire occurred onboard flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1), HMCS Fredericton.
Upon discovery of the fire, the crew immediately took action and extinguished the fire. There were no injuries, and the ship is now proceeding towards a Norwegian port to conduct repairs.
HMCS Fredericton was assisted by several other NATO warships that were serving in SNMG1, as well as the Norwegian Coast Guard.
SNMG1 is continuing on mission to take part in the Norwegian Flotex Silver 21 Exercise from 22 Nov to 3 Dec 2021.
Flotex Silver, hosted by the Royal Norwegian Navy, trains in planning and executing tactical operations at sea in coordination with NATO assets, norms and procedures, contributing to more comprehensive interoperability across the Alliance, even in the harshest of climates. Flotex Silver provides multi-dimensional training opportunities, especially in anti-submarine warfare, under challenging conditions. Designed to test a wide range of skills, the exercise consists of several classic warfare challenges conducted by warships, submarines and aircrafts in coastal and offshore waters in the High North, off the coast of Norway.
