On Dec 13th, a virtual public apology will be offered to all current and former members of the Defence Team who have been affected by sexual assault, sexual harassment or discrimination based on sex, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation. Offering apologies will be the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of National Defence; General Wayne Eyre, Chief of the Defence Staff; and Jody Thomas, Deputy Minister of National Defence.

VAdm Craig Baines, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, has announced the names of the four new Naval Large Tugs that are being built by Ocean Industries Inc. of Isle-aux-Coudres, Quebec, under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Named Haro, Barkerville, Canso, and Stella Maris the new tugs will provide support to enable warship movements and provide fire protection for the Navy’s Pacific and Atlantic Fleets.

In the early morning of 18 November 2021, while off the coast of Norway, a fire occurred onboard flagship of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1), HMCS Fredericton. There were no injuries and the ship is now proceeding towards a Norwegian port to conduct repairs.

A promotion ceremony was held today for Wayne Eyre who continues in the role of Acting Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), now at the rank of General. "His work has been absolutely critical in helping Canadians from coast to coast, while pushing forward with the important work of transforming the Canadian Armed Forces," said Defence Minister Sajjan in a press release.

Provost Marshal BGen Simon Trudeau announced the end of the investigation into potential sexual misconduct against Admiral Art McDonald this evening. He said that after a 6-month investigation, "evidence […] did not support the laying of charges. Defence Minister Sajjan’s office has declined to comment on whether McDonald would be reinstated as CDS.

The Royal Canadian Navy transferred command of the Combined Maritime Forces’ Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) to the Royal New Zealand Navy during a change of command ceremony held on 15 July 2021 at the U.S. Naval Base, Naval Support Activity Bahrain.

Another milestone was reached today in the arrival of the RCN’s future fleet with the delivery of the second Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), the future HMCS Margaret Brooke. She will remain docked at the Halifax Dockyard while post-acceptance work and final ship preparation work are completed. A naming ceremony for the ship is expected to be held later in 2021, with a formal commissioning ceremony expected in fall 2022.

Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) warships are deployed in the Baltic Sea as part of a multi-national exercise. This year, the annual Baltops exercise involves 4,000 personnel from 19 countries and featuring air defence, anti-submarine warfare, amphibious operations, maritime interdiction, and mine countermeasures operations.

Today, Defence Minister Sajjan tabled in Parliament the report on the Third Independent Review of specified provisions of the National Defence Act (NDA) and their operation. Initiated in November 2020, this review provides recommendations on one of the largest overhauls of the NDA and Canadian military justice system.

The Department of National Defence says that Major-General Dany Fortin "has left his assignment with the Public Health Agency of Canada, pending the results of a military investigation." The DND press release offered no details but confirmed that "Acting Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant-General Eyre will be reviewing next steps with Major-General Fortin." He had been assigned as vice-president of logistics and operations at PHAC for the vaccine roll-out since November 2020.
