Another milestone was reached today in the arrival of the RCN’s future fleet with the delivery of the second Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), the future HMCS Margaret Brooke. She will remain docked at the Halifax Dockyard while post-acceptance work and final ship preparation work are completed. A naming ceremony for the ship is expected to be held later in 2021, with a formal commissioning ceremony expected in fall 2022.

Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) warships are deployed in the Baltic Sea as part of a multi-national exercise. This year, the annual Baltops exercise involves 4,000 personnel from 19 countries and featuring air defence, anti-submarine warfare, amphibious operations, maritime interdiction, and mine countermeasures operations.

Today, Defence Minister Sajjan tabled in Parliament the report on the Third Independent Review of specified provisions of the National Defence Act (NDA) and their operation. Initiated in November 2020, this review provides recommendations on one of the largest overhauls of the NDA and Canadian military justice system.

The Department of National Defence says that Major-General Dany Fortin "has left his assignment with the Public Health Agency of Canada, pending the results of a military investigation." The DND press release offered no details but confirmed that "Acting Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant-General Eyre will be reviewing next steps with Major-General Fortin." He had been assigned as vice-president of logistics and operations at PHAC for the vaccine roll-out since November 2020.

A pair of Boeing CF-188 Hornets out of Canadian Forces Base Bagotville, Quebec, supported by an Airbus CC-150T Polaris tanker from Trenton, Ontario, recently completed a High Arctic training mission out of Iqaluit. The mission involved air-to-air refueling over Baffin Bay and a patrol northeast of Baffin Island.

RCN Cmdre Bradley Peats assumed command of Standing NATO Maritime Group One at a ceremony in Lisbon Jan 18. He takes over from Portuguese Navy Cmdre José António Mirones. SNMG1 is one of four Standing Naval Forces in the alliance.

A Change of Command ceremony, beginning at 2:15 pm on 14 January 2021, will see command transfer from General Jonathan Vance to Vice-Admiral Art McDonald as the incoming Chief of the Defence Staff.

Vice-Admiral Craig Baines assumed the duties of Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy from Vice-Admiral Art McDonald this afternoon in a virtual change of command ceremony presided over by General Jonathan Vance, outgoing Chief of the Defence Staff, at the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa.

The frigate HMCS Halifax is Canada’s latest naval contribution to Operation Reassurance in central and eastern Europe, a key element of NATO’s collective defence. The 15th RCN deployment since 2014, the frigate, which departed 1 January 2021, will serve as the flagship of the alliance’s Standing Maritime Group 1, which normally comprises four to six destroyers and frigates.
