Two RCAF Boeing CF-18 Hornets from 443 Tactical Sqn in Bagotville, Quebec, deployed to Operation Reassurance’s Air Task Force Romania, intercepted a Russian SU-27 Flanker over the Black Sea 23 September. It was the first such intercept since the ATF began its mission three weeks earlier.

The RCAF marked the arrival of the first aircraft of its future fixed-wing search and rescue fleet. The new fleet will be called Kingfisher. The CC-295 Kingfisher fleet will be based at four locations across Canada, in Comox, Trenton, Greenwood, and Winnipeg. The aircraft will arrive in phases as crews are trained in turn at each location.

The Canadian Armed Forces has long appreciated the value of the biennial U.S. Navy-led Rim of the Pacific war games, having been involved from the first one in 1971. Hence plans are underway for CAF participation in the scaled-down 2020 version of the world’s largest international military exercise imposed by COVID-19.

10 May update: Partial remains of second crew member, Captain Brenden Ian MacDonald, have been identified after CH-148 Cyclone accident. A repatriation ceremony for all six Canadian Armed Forces members killed at sea in a helicopter crash, took place on 6 May 2020. Read original story and updates here.

A Canadian Cyclone helicopter deployed on HMCS Fredericton has gone missing while on a NATO exercise with allies off the western coast of Greece in the Ionian Sea. DND has confirmed that a search and rescue mission is underway at this time.

HMCS Regina has completed a six-and-a-half month deployment to the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions and returned to CFB Esquimalt today. As a replacement, HMCS Ottawa recently departed for a four-and-a-half month deployment to the region.

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan announced that $250 million will be spent to repair and upgrade Canadian Armed Forces Reserves armouries and training facilities over the next five years. His department says the plan will “accommodate future growth in the reserves” to a projected 30,000 while adding new equipment.

General Jonathan Vance presided over a change of appointment ceremony today at National Defence Headquarters in which Lieutenant-General Jean-Marc Lanthier assumed the responsibilities of the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (VCDS), replacing LGen Paul Wynnyk who retires after over 38 years of service to Canada.

The Government of Canada has awarded contracts to Chantier Davie and Seaspan Victoria Shipyards Limited (initially totalling $1 billion) to carry out maintenance work on the first group of Canada’s Halifax-class frigates. A similar contract with Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is currently being finalized.

The first Airbus C295 purchased for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Fixed Wing Search and Rescue (FWSAR) program, completed its maiden flight on 4 July. Delivery is expected by the end of this year, when the RCAF will begin operational testing.
