Commodore Josée Kurtz of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) officially assumed command of Standing NATO Maritime Group Two (SNMG2), from Commodore Boudewijn Boots of the Royal Netherlands Navy, during a change of command ceremony held in Souda Bay on the Greek island of Crete over the weekend.

The Government of Canada has awarded a $102 million contract to Ocean Industries Inc., from Isle‑aux-Coudres, Quebec, for the acquisition of four tugs. These new tugs will provide towing, firefighting and other critical support services to both the Atlantic and Pacific Maritime Forces.

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships (HMCS) Kingston and Shawinigan, both Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs), are set to arrive in West Africa on 23 February. The ships departed from Halifax in January 2019 and have now completed their trans-Atlantic crossing, arriving in the Gulf of Guinea region of West Africa to conduct Operation PROJECTION West Africa.

The inspection of a dental clinic in Kingston, where a number of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) patients have been treated, has identified improper cleaning and sterilization of dental instruments, which could result in blood-borne infections like Hepatitis and HIV. While no such infections have been reported and the risk is considered low, the Surgeon General is taking precautions to ensure the health and safety of these CAF members.
