Defence Minister Anita Anand has announced that Quebec-based Logistik Unicorp won a contract to provide operational clothing and footwear to the Canadian Armed Forces. Valued at up to $3.7 billion over 20 years, this contract will support more 3000 jobs and will deliver approximately 1,222 different items of clothing and footwear worn by CAF members during deployments.

Chief of the Defence Staff General Wayne Eyre concluded the 2022 meeting of the Arctic Chiefs of Defence in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Canada hosted representatives from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and the United States to share lessons learned from ongoing Arctic operations and to coordinate enhanced cooperation.

Explosions could be heard Wednesday in Kyiv, Odessa, and several other Ukrainian cities as Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the start of a “special military operation” against Ukraine, the scope of which wasn’t immediately clear. Just before dawn, residents of Kyiv were ordered into bomb shelters amid reports of incoming air attacks.

Now that order has been restored in Ottawa and Canada's border crossings, the Prime Minister says the government can revoke the Emergencies Act. The House of Commons had just approved the strong measures on Monday night. The crisis had raged at full bore and full volume for 20 days previous to the announcement of emergency powers which immediately froze financial support and made tow trucks into essential services.

VAdm Craig Baines, Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy, has announced the names of the four new Naval Large Tugs that are being built by Ocean Industries Inc. of Isle-aux-Coudres, Quebec, under the National Shipbuilding Strategy. Named Haro, Barkerville, Canso, and Stella Maris the new tugs will provide support to enable warship movements and provide fire protection for the Navy’s Pacific and Atlantic Fleets.

Public Services and Procurement Canada has confirmed that Lockheed Martin and Saab are the only contenders that “remain eligible” in the long-delayed plan to supply the RCAF with 88 new fighters as replacement for its legacy fleet of CF-188 Hornets.

The Allies are looking for ways to defend the cognitive dimension against adversaries who are rapidly weaponizing information, using especially social media and turning potentially every connected device into a vector of attack.

After acting in the position since February 2021, General Wayne Eyre has now been appointed to the position of Chief of the Defence Staff. Congratulating him, Defence Minister Anita Anand confirmed that "General Eyre and I will continue to work together to build a military where all members feel safe, protected, and respected, wherever they are, whatever they are doing."
