Defence minister comments on International Women's Day
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan today made the following statement, on the occasion of International Women's Day, to honour the outstanding service of women in the Canadian Armed Forces and at the Department of National Defence:
"International Women’s Day presents an opportunity for us to honour the outstanding service of women in the Canadian Armed Forces and at the Department of National Defence and to consider our next steps as we strive towards gender equality in our organization.
"This year’s CAF/DND theme is ‘Women Moving Forward.’ I am proud to say that Canada is a world leader in the integration of women in our military. Women have equal opportunities to serve in all areas of our Forces and Department, as well as at all levels of leadership in both organizations.
"However, there is always more work to be done as we work towards gender equality.
“In the Canadian Armed Forces and at the Department of National Defence, female representation is increasing. There are strong female role models in the CAF and at DND who inspire leadership within their communities. As I applaud the leadership’s renewed efforts in achieving representation goals, I also applaud the efforts of every female team member who stands up to gender-based discrimination, who serves honourably in the face of adversity, and who remembers that her service and dedication to Canada sends a positive message – not just to women and girls – but to everyone around the globe.
“The women of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces are pillars in our organization and I thank them for their service and dedication. I also encourage you to join us in supporting and empowering women and girls at home and abroad, not just on this International Women’s Day, but on every day of the year.”
