Canada's Minister of National Defence, Anita Anand, announced the purchase of a National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) and associated munitions from the United States to donate to Ukraine. Valued at approximately $406 million, this donation is part of the $500 million in military aid that the Prime Minister promised to Ukraine in November 2022. It is the first Canadian donation of an air defence system to Ukraine.

Speculation ended today when Defence Minister Anita Anand confirmed that four of the Canadian Army’s 82 “combat ready” main battle tanks will be sent to Ukraine “in the coming weeks” to support an expected spring counter-offensive against a renewed push in Russia’s brutal invasion. Training by Canadian Army personnel will take place in an unspecified “third country.”

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan attended his first NATO Defence Ministers’ Meeting on February 10th to 11th, at NATO Headquarters in Brussels and then participated in a meeting of defence ministers from countries contributing to the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan confirmed today that all Canadian Armed Forces personnel deployed to “advise and assist” Iraqi security forces in the NATO-led Operation Impact will be able to respond “in kind” if they are attacked by so-called Islamic State fighters.
