Breaking News: Bastille Day Massacre

In what is being described in local French media reports as a terrorist attack, a truck driver sped along the promenade in Nice, plowing through and over people in the crowd. Initial reports estimated more than 30 dead, but that has been recently updated to more than 60 killed. The large crowd was celebrating Bastille Day along the waterfront, and the calamity took place as the fireworks were ending, which added to the confusion when gunfire was heard.  [node:read-more:link]

Portugal wildfire remains active

Hundreds of firefighters are battling wildfires in a forested, mountainous area of central Portugal. The Portuguese army has sent soldiers and machinery into the area to open routes for firefighters. The biggest operation – involving 800 firefighters, 245 vehicles including bulldozers, and 13 planes and helicopters – is tackling a fire in the municipality of Vila de Rei. [node:read-more:link]

Arctic fires in June emit record CO2 levels

Wildfires in the Arctic last month emitted 50 megatonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere – as much as all of Sweden does in a year, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
