A new paper from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute explores the financial cost of war using links between taxation and defence spending and drawing on data from 100 countries, including Ukraine. It offers evidence to understand how increases in military spending may affect tax structures, but also how low-income, autocratic and conflict-affected countries fund their military spending.

The Ontario firm is a subsidiary of Norsat International in B.C. which is owned by Shenzen-based Hytera, banned in the U.S. because of its links to the Chinese military.

Boeing today reported a fourth-quarter 2022 loss of US$650 million, blaming “abnormal production costs” as it tried to deliver a backlog of 737 Max jets, accelerate 787 Dreamliner deliveries and address lagging 787 production. “We continue to face a few too many stoppages in our lines . . . as we run into supply chain shortfalls,” CEO Dave Calhoun said, expecting a first-quarter 2023 loss.

At least one shooter is still on the loose after a shooting inside a McDonald's at Munich's Olympia shopping mall Friday, police spokeswoman Claudia Küntzel said. "There could be several dead and one or even several shooters are on the loose." The shooting happened around 5:50 p.m. (11:50 a.m. ET).

"All he has is a toy truck," the man shouts, worried that the police may harm his autistic (white male) patient who had run away from the group. "I am a behavior therapist at a group home." Inexplicably, the caregiver is shot in the leg by police as he lays on the pavement with his patient sitting at his feet (like a protective puppy).

In what is being described in local French media reports as a terrorist attack, a truck driver sped along the promenade in Nice, plowing through and over people in the crowd. Initial reports estimated more than 30 dead, but that has been recently updated to more than 60 killed. The large crowd was celebrating Bastille Day along the waterfront, and the calamity took place as the fireworks were ending, which added to the confusion when gunfire was heard.

The U.S. Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into the fatal police shooting of a black man in Louisiana's capital, the state's governor said on Thursday, as two deadly encounters between law enforcement and black men triggered peaceful protests. It is not known yet if a subsequent shooting of police officers is linked.
