Hackers shut down utilities

Intermittent U.S. power grid shutdowns last March were caused by hackers exploiting utilities’ firewall vulnerabilities. The North American Electric Reliability Corp. says grids were down for up to five minutes at a time but that the software issues have been resolved. [node:read-more:link]

Google fined over children’s privacy

Google Inc. has agreed to a $170-million fine and to make changes to its YouTube video service to protect children’s privacy. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General of New York said the company had illegally harvested and used personal information to target children with advertising. Facebook faces another suit

In the fourth lawsuit of its kind in a month, a group of Facebook subscribers say the company neglected to inform them about a data breach even as it protected its own employers against hackers who could exploit Facebook’s single sign-on tool. Personal data vulnerability confirmed

Researchers working with vpnMentor, a biometric security company, say they have gained access to more than a million fingerprints and other sensitive held at BioStar 2, an identity and access control platform developed by South Korea-based Suprema Inc. Security gaps identified at Ottawa city hall
